Maximilian Maria Kolbe OFM Conv. was a Polish Conventual Franciscan friar who during the World War II German occupation of Poland, volunteered to die in place of a stranger in the concentration camp at Auschwitz. Kolbe's call sign was SP3RN and in the early years of the Polish occupation he used his station to report the atrocities being committed by the Nazis.
